Geocache Description:

(Warning: Although the cache itself is 100% family friendly, the ongoing stories associated with them may not be suitable for youngsters. If caching with kids, feel free to take them along and spare them the story.)

It’s been 4 weeks since the first infection.

Things are looking bleak, fellow survivors. For the most part the infected seem uninterested in the survivors. If we stay out of sight then they don’t become provoked. Dmitri, one of the other men staying in our group at the apartment had been growing stir crazy. I don’t blame him. Nobody in the world could be expected to handle something like this rationally. The only way I’m dealing with it as good as I am is knowing that I have my wife, Sarah, to protect. These are times when over thinking your situation will drive you crazy. Dmitri is not as controlled.

Earlier this week I went up to the roof to find him throwing the potted plants over the edge. He was furious; mad with fear. I suspected that he may even be in the early stages of infection. We all sort of figured we must be immune to any air-borne strings of the virus, but who really knows? I wrestled the plant from his hands and shook him to his senses. He couldn’t form the words to explain his fear. Apparently he had become convinced the infected were trying to get inside the apartment. He was sure they wanted to devour him and his girlfriend. (As of now we’re not even sure the infected engage in cannibalism. Personally, I think it’s just a myth that people assumed from watching too many movies.) Regardless, his attacks on the infected had made them aware of our presence, and we were forced to abandon the apartment. We stayed hidden in the boiler room for the night. It was terrifying. We could hear them shuffle and roam the halls. They would occasionally scream and thrash at random. The next day we packed what small supplies we had and found a new hideaway.

We’ve now taken shelter in an abandoned seafood store. Before the infection my wife and I used to buy fresh Tilapia here. Once the virus spread most stores around here shut down. It still smells like foul inventory in here, which is surprisingly a blessing since it masks the smell of those creatures outside. Dmitri is convinced that it’s too small of a shelter to protect us from anything, and has chosen to head out on his own with his girlfriend. I keep trying to convince everyone that the only way to survive is to stay together, but the paranoia has consumed him. I wish him luck, but don’t expect to see him alive anytime soon. We’ve learned not to use the front entrance (the side entrance is much safer.) The infected are actually more observant than I expected. From observing them it almost seems like they’re communicating. I pray that it’s simple thoughts, and that they lack the ability to do any kind of organized action. It’s odd, though. It almost seems that when one of the infected becomes aware of something, the others do too. Could they have developed a hive mind?

I’ve placed another cache outside of our shelter. Please exercise caution when retrieving it, as there are several infected that stumble by this area even during the day. I wish I could say I was selfless enough that I only worried about you being attacked, but to be honest I don’t want to bringing any more attention to our hiding place. Don’t attempt to knock on the door or make contact with us in person. If you find this cache, please write a note about how you’re holding up in these dark times. Perhaps once we’ve established that it’s safe we can even pool our resources and help each other out. We can get through this. We have to…
