Barnstone Ponds Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

northking: I have contacted the current landowner, after recently spotting that the pond is up for sale and found out that there is an ongoing dispute with the land mangers and the Woodland Trust, where proper access is obtained. I am therefore reluctantly archiving as the situation is likely to worsen and the original permission to place this cache is no longer current. New permission would be required from new owners and appears unlikely. This was the first cache that I placed, and the location is still worthy of a visit. This was the start of a great ongoing journey. Thanks to all who visited.

Geocache Description:

Formerly Nuts in Notts 1 (series competition ended). Access and walking are easy in this quiet and picturesque location. You may have to climb a stile to get to the cache, cache currently submerged due to rising pond level. So D/T temp increased.

As this is our first cache we found a place close to our home and somewhere that is very quiet. There is something for everyone around the cache, with a Wildflower Farm, an airfield and public bridleways and footpaths.

The cache can be approached from the village of Barnstone or by parking on the very quiet single track road in Langar, near to the location.

The cache is a tube approx 6 inches in length, it contains a logbook, pen and pencil and will start with two gold ingot geocoins, these will hopefully embark on separate journeys and keep the NorthKings guessing which one will travel the furthest. **Now a silver coloured Thermos**

Hope you enjoy the countryside views, and especially Belvoir Castle on the horizon.

The area is designated as a Woodland Welcome site so please enjoy and respect the plantation, the cache is situated near to the fishponds so be aware if in company with young children. The nearby airstrip, formerly known as RAF Langar (52°53'30 000°54'07) is a former military airport in England. The field is located 12 miles south-east of the centre of Nottingham in Nottinghamshire, a few miles south of Bingham.
The airport was opened in September 1942 and during World War II it was used by the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Force Ninth Air Force.
The airfield was used after the war for a short time for prisoners of war and then for displaced persons. Early in 1952 it was taken over by the RCAF Royal Canadian Air Force to become a supply base for their NATO squadrons. The Base was constructed on the old domestic and technical sites with completely new buildings, to a much higher standard than the Air Ministry was used to, by an English design team under the direction of an RCAF officer. For 12 months nearly 1000 men worked constructing the Base, which worked around three two acre warehouses, during the Cold War. It was the only Canadian base in the UK.
With the facility released from military control in 1963, the airfield is now the base for the British Parachute Schools, who use the original control tower for their headquarters. You can often see the parachutists landing in the area. There is also a go-karting track. The airfield is relatively intact, with most of its wartime facilities still in use.

Also nearby is the Naturescape Wildflower Farm which has a range of wild flowers in bloom over 30 acres of fields which attract associated butterflies, birds and mammals and a wildlife garden featuring many habitats to provide ideas for the visitor.
