In Memory of Yaquis
ESPAÑOL - De 1908 a 1910, alrededor de 15,000 indios Yaqui fueron capturados en Sonora y forzados a ir a trabajar como esclavos en los campos de henequen en Yucatán. Estas personas fueron transportadas por barco de Guaymas a San Blas desde donde tuvieron que caminar 300 kilómetros sobre las montañas hasta San Marcos. Muchísimos murieron durante la larga marcha, en especial mujeres con sus bebés.
Los mantuvieron en campos de concentración vendiéndolos como esclavos en la estación ferrocarril de San Marcos. En Yucatán los golpeaban a diario y los encerraban en la noche bajo custodia, recibiendo muy poca comida. La mayoría no sobrevivió el primer año de esclavitud.

ENGLISH - From 1908 to 1910, around 15,000 Yaqui Indians were captured in Sonora and forced to become slaves on the henequen plantations of Yucatan. The Indians were taken by boat from Guaymas to San Blas where they then had to walk 300 kilometers over the mountains to San Marcos. Many died on the long march, especially women with small babies.
They were kept in concentration camps and then sold as slaves in the San Marcos train station. In Yucatan, they were beat daily, locked up under guard at night and given very little food. The majority of them did not survive the first year of slavery.
