Geocache Description:

Cache is a medium sized lock'n'lock located on top of Shavers Mountain just underneath the Beulah BM at the NGS NAD 83 BM coordinates.

"Congratulations to Yougart for a First To Find 9/12/09"

The town of Beulah is no more, but the Beulah benchmark (HW3596) still sets in a boulder on top of Shavers Mountain. From it you can see over the Shavers Fork and Glady Fork valleys, but the forest has grown since the Coast and Geodetic Survey set this BM as a triangulation station in 1957.

The cache is a medium-sized plastic lock’n’lock. The cache is placed directly beneath the benchmark, so the coordinates for the benchmark and cache are the same (although the elevations differ slightly). The benchmark is a standard brass disc set in an aprx. 6-ft wide boulder on the east rim of the ridge. We found a triangular rock cairn on the boulder next to the benchmark, and a flat rock lying atop the benchmark. Not knowing who placed them here or how long they’ve stood we left these stones as we found them. Please continue the tradition.

There is no trail to the benchmark, it’s a rough and rocky bushwack up from the High Falls Trail (Tr. No. 345) or Allegheny Trail (Tr. No. 701). You can bushwack to the cache and Beulah benchmark from a large rock cairn found at aprx. N38 deg. 45' 27.47" W79 deg. 45' 31.59" along the High Falls Trail (shorter/steeper bushwack) or from the intersection of the High Falls and Allegheny Trails in the saddle gap (longer/more gradual bushwack) or anywhere along High Falls Trail between these points.

(Congratulations to 89SC for FTF Beulah BM and both Reference Marks...we're impressed!)

Cautionary Notes...!

You might want to let a loved one know where you’re headed. You’ll be off the beaten path and it’s not likely another geocacher will show up at this cache for a while.

As always in the Mon Nat’l Forest, dress to be visible during the fall hunting season.

Older topo maps show Shavers Mountain Trail running just below the BM, this trail is no longer maintained.

Cache contents at the start of the game are: compass keychain, measuring tape keychain, bear bell, poncho, carabiner bottle clip, railroad lantern pencil sharpener, dominoes-in-crate, surveyor flagging.
