Maple Island is located at the west end of Magician Lake in Silver Creek Township, Cass County, MI near the resort community of Sister Lakes. Maple Island, is one of the three island in Magician Lake, was undeveloped until 1895 when business and industrial leaders in nearby Dowagiac, MI purchased the island and land for a road to the island from a local farmer. The developers subdivided the island into 42 lots of various sizes all with lakefront access and later added numerous boathouse lots along the road leading to the island. In the beginning it was necessary for horses and wagons to fjord across to the island. But later several bridges were built to reach the island across a narrow wetland area. The developers also reserved land for a central park that has become a recreational point for island residents and friends. The island is organized as a non-profit condominium with the title of Maple Island Resort Association, a 100 year old organization that establishes rules for island residents and maintains the private road and park area. Today the island is home to ten year-around residents and more than 30 summer residents who live in northern Indiana, the Chicago area, and other cities in Michigan.
