I found the wanderer prone near the ancient portal; his
weathered and ragged clothing indicative of the rugged life he must
have lived. His appearance was nearly human. His basic form
differed little from that of my own, saving for the number of
digits at the end of each extremity being three instead of
five.
I felt sorry for the man, as his ending seemed brutal and
lonely. Yet in some ways I envied him. I found a small diary on the
ground beside him, and as I browsed its contents it became clear to
me that he lead a life of unimaginable adventure. Pages 1 through
15 were mostly uninteresting accounts of youthful bravado, but the
tales starting on page 20 mesmerized me. They were stories of
adventure, mischief, and intrigue that would match my wildest
dreams.
The last tale in the diary was incomplete. It spoke of the
“Rune stones of Harwood’s Mill”, which are to be
found in our realm. Throughout the ages, it has been very rare for
an outsider to visit our realm; but the being before me had thought
if he could visit all of the stones, he would have the key to some
vast treasure.
The story described the Rune stones as ancient relics that would
draw seekers for a myriad of reasons; with each having a keeper who
was a custodian, being responsible for guarding the stone’s
secrets from the unworthy. The wanderer had traveled here before
and met with the keepers. I believe he made notes from his
encounters, but alas the notes appear to have been snatched from
the diary, as there were four missing pages.
Unfortunately for me, I am certain of the fact that I will never
experience such a life as the wanderer embraced; for the days of my
youth are long past and I must admit to being cowardly by nature. I
reluctantly share with you the tiny note I pulled from his stiff
three fingered hand. Good luck and be careful, for there is no
telling what mysteries you may encounter and what challenges will
test your mettle.
