The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries and historic sites built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just over three years, the quest has grown to over six hundred caches hidden in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan and Ontario and the hiders have grown to THIRTY cacher teams, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 1,000 cacher teams have logged over 20,500 finds.
INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #685
This quest will bring you to the Pleasant View Cemetery in Monroe County. This is also the site of the Old Doughboy virtual cache. While visiting the virtual cache, I decided there might as well be a traditional cache here as well.
Big Red One Veteran
The headstone of Minor Pryor is partially covered by a bush, but is worth a look. Pryor was a member of the 26th Infantry Regiment which was part of the 1st US Infantry Division, also known as the Big Red One. One of the most famous American military units, the Big Red One saw action in all US conflicts of the 20th century. They were amongst the first American units to enter France during WWI. The 26th Infantry Regiment earned 7 battle ribbons during WWI and during the Battle of Soissons the regiment had 1500 casualties out of 3100 men. It appears Private Pryor survived the war only to die a year later.
WWII Veteran
Percy Pontious was a member of the 607th Tank Destroyer regiment. This unit was part of the 90th Infantry Division and saw heavy action during the last year of WWII. The unit landed at Normandy on June 16, 1944; 10 days after D-Day. They were then involved in all major actions as the allies fought their way into Germany. The unit also was present during the Battle of the Bulge.
Ohio Civil War veteran
C W Track was a member of the 185th Ohio Infantry Regiment. This unit was formed near the end of the Civil War and spent six months in 1865 performing guard duty in the Kentucky area.
Landrum Incorporated
Here was another headstone that caught my attention. Occupational headstones are always of interest and provide some information on the interred. FIND LOGS ON THIS CACHE THAT INDICATE NIGHT CACHING WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT NOTICE!!
None genuine without this official SixDogTeam seal. Photographs taken by Lead Dog, (C) 2006 by RikSu Outfitters unless otherwise noted.
