Fillmore Glen State Park is an oasis of cool, dense woods crowding into a long, narrow gorge. Its hiking trails offer spectacular views, unique geological formations, including five waterfalls, and a botanically rich glen. The park has 60 campsites, a stream-fed swimming pool and fishing in the Owasco Lake inlet. In the winter, hiking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are permitted on unplowed roads. A glen is a valley, typically one that is long, deep, and often glacially U-shaped; or one with a watercourse running through such a valley. The word comes from the Irish language/Scottish Gaelic language word gleann, or glion in Manx. In Manx, glan is also to be found meaning glen. As the name of a river, it is thought to derive from the Welsh language glan meaning clean, or gleindid meaning purity. In the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, the southern ends of Seneca and Cayuga in particular are etched with glens, although in this region the term "glen" refers most frequently to a narrow gorge, as opposed to a wider valley. The steep hills surrounding these lakes are filled with loose shale from glacial moraines. This material has eroded over the past 10,000 years to produce beautiful rocky glens (e.g., Watkins Glen and Treman State Parks) and waterfalls as rainfall has descended toward the lakes below. Directions to the park and more information about the size, number and type of waterfalls is available on the park's website at http://nyfalls.com/fillmoreglensp.html Please check the website before attempting the cache. I had originally included a winter accessible icon, but some years, the trail has been closed. To claim this cache, first park at the above suggested coords and walk to the following set, where you should take your picture with a prominent feature in the background: N42' 41.890 W076' 24.786. Please describe how this feature was created and how high it is. You can continue on this trail or go back to your car and drive closer to the next location, where you should take a second picture, once you have hiked down the trail. These coords are N42' 41.711 W076' 23.938 What is this area called? What is taking place here? Please e-mail the answers and post your pictures with your logs. LOGS WITH NO ANSWERS WILL BE DELETED.
