Quis custodiet ipsos
custodes? is a Latin phrase from the Roman poet Juvenal, which
literally translates to "Who will guard the guards themselves?",
and is variously translated in colloquial English as "Who watches
the watchmen?", "Who watches the watchers?", "Who will guard the
guardians?", "Who shall watch the watchers?", "Who polices the
police?" or other similar translations.
The South African Police Memorial is
located in the grounds of the Union Buildings in Pretoria and
commemorates officers of the South African Police Service who died
in the line of duty.
It was unveiled on 17th of October
1984 by Mr.P.W Botha DMS, State President of Republic of South
Africa. The cornerstone was laid on 20 May 1983 by the commissioner
of the South African police General M.C.W. Geldenhuys S.E.O.,
S.O.O., S.O.E., S.O.

On this roll of honour appear the
names of those members of the South African police who according to
available police records, died in the execution of their duty for
South Africa and its peoples.
The memorial features plates inscribed
with the names of the dead, and it is located across from an
amphitheater that hosts an annual memorial service to commemorate
South African police officers killed in the line of duty
