Geocache Description:

Very short walk after ample parking at the trail head (West Rim Trail-Petaca Segment cords= N36°21.092 W105°44.274

Look straight ahead and take a minute to enjoy the view. Ahead you can see the Picuris Mountains and down into the bottom of the Rio Grande Gorge. Two big horn sheep were seen recently about 500 feet from this location. Looking to your left, you can see where the Town of Taos and Ranchos de Taos are located. Also note the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

A trail road going down into the Rio Grande Gorge was here before Carson was homesteaded in 1909. The road was improved in 1914 when a wooden bridge was donated by the D & R G Railroad to cross the river and improve access to Taos. This is when Taos Junction (9 1/2 miles West) was built for a Depot for the Chili Line that ran from Alamosa, Colorado to Santa Fe, New Mexico. In l956 a new steel bridge was built to replace the wooden bridge over the Rio Grande and is known as the Taos Junction Bridge. This road is still being used by the people from Carson to get to
Taos as well as a lot of other people.
