Geocache Description:

These cords takes you to a set of cords that will lead you to the final Phase. Off road parking in dry weather otherwise use care when parking on the pavement.

Carson, named after the famous Indian Scout Kit Carson, is a farming community started by Homesteaders in 1909. At one time there was a house on every 160 acres. The main crop was dry-land pinto beans. Later years there was sheep and cattle raising on the Mesa.

By the 1940's many of the people left because of dry conditions. In the 1960's people started returning and after the roads were improved even more people moved back to Carson. Now there are over 150 families in the area. They are not farmers or ranchers. Many are retired and others work in Taos. There are several Summer homes in the area.

The owner gave permission for this cache and this ranch has been operating here since 1940 and is still active raising cattle.

You will notice the old rock school house built in 1921.
The rock was the basalt from the area and cut by a local stone mason. Over 50 children attended the school. The school operated from 1921 until around 1935. It is now privately owned.

Park in the driveway. No need to cross any fence.
