The Spanish Turrets can be regarded as the
symbol of the city and fortress of Luxembourg and form the actual
logo of the Luxembourg city tourist office (LCTO).
Most of the turrets were set up in the middle of
the 17th century, integrated in the large fortifications initiated
by the Spaniards and continued by Vauban, mainly as overhanging
elements of the bastions. Apparently there were once around 40 of
them. To date, there are only 8 turrets remaining in the city.
The actual purpose of the Spanish Turrets has
not been clearly established. During wartimes, they made possible
the observation of the moats to protect against enemies. During the
longer peacetimes, they may have served as surveillance to prevent
spies to enter the fortress and prisoners to escape from the
fortress.
You can find out more about the turrets by
visiting them individually.
You need a GPS with an altimeter function and
may use the Panorama City Map which is available free of charge at
the LCTO. Weather with stable pressure conditions is of advantage.
Be prepared for a tour of about 8 km.
Start your journey at the indicated coordinates
(N49°36.682 E006°08.171) and calibrate your altimeter. Find your
own route from turret to turret. The recommended route passes from
South to North. The turrets (ST) are numbered from 1 to 8.
From your examination of the individual turrets you are able to
determine:
The number of the turret corresponding to the picture. Note that
2 pictures don’t correspond to any turret and are numbered
0.
Indicated altitude at the starting coordinates (K) (L) (M) = __
__ __.
The number of the turret with the highest altitude P= __.
The number of the turret with the lowest altitude Q= __.
The altitude (elevation above sea level) of the turrets is measured
one meter above the ground level of the turret.
The number of the turret which has a non-cylindrical foundation
R= __.
The number of edges of the foundation of the non-cylindrical turret
U= __.
FINAL: N49°3(U),(E+J-R)(D-G+Q)(P-M+K)
E006°0(L),(C+F-K)(A+B-H)(P+I-R).
Be careful when searching for the final, especially after sunset
(precipice of rock nearby)!
After having done this cache you have found 8 turrets. There may
be one more! But that’s another cache, the Mystery The 9th Turret.
