This cache is located in the market town of Chipping Sodbury in
South Gloucestershire.
Most of the stone in South Gloucestershire is sedimentary, and the
area around Chipping Sodbury is no exception.
The stone here was formed in the Carboniferous period approximately
350 million years ago. Sediments were laid down in tropical seas,
each layer being covered by others, eventually forming a thick
layer of sediment. Over the next 50-70 million years, pressure
converted the sediments into rock and also caused the layers to
concertina forming a chain of mountains. These mountains were then
planed off by weather and sea erosion.
The sediments that originally formed this stone were teaming with
life and these have been preserved as fossils in the rock.
The above coordinates will take you to an information board which
will tell you more about one type of fossilised coral that can be
found here.
In order to claim this cache you must email the answers to the
following two questions to my profile:
• What is the name of this fossilised coral?
• What is the name of the stone beneath where you are
standing?
Then you should:
• Explore Chipping Sodbury and find an example of this
fossil.
• Email me the coordinates of where you found the fossil
• Optional: Please post a photograph of yourself or your GPS
with the fossil you have found.
