Geocache Description:

The old Quaker burial ground for Ravenstonedale.

The early Quakers in this area met at Dovengill, with worshippers walking over from Grisedale. The baptism is recorded of Mary Pinder as early as 1650 — evidently her parents did not wish to have her baptised in the established church. George Fox visited here in 1652, and the burial ground was first used in 1659 for the burial of John Scaife of Black Syke, Warcop. Over a hundred and sixty burials are recorded here or at the other site next to the old meeting house, but there is little evidence of them because there are no headstones. The cache is not inside the graveyard because it still belongs to the local Friends. The container is a small “clik-lok”.
