Peter Neal first came to Dog River in 1844. At the age of 23
he was already an old timer when it came to pioneering. He
left his native Virginia and had tried things in Tennessee,
Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas before heading for Oregon. When
the party arrived in The Dalles they decided to go to the
Willamette Valley by raft. They stopped at the mouth of the
Dog River, as Hood River was then known. During the rest
period Peter took his gun and headed up the valley and marveled at
what he saw. The party proceeded on to Oregon City where he
worked for the Hudson's Bay Company as a blacksmith for about 17
years. He returned to Hood River in 1860 and with the
assistance of Hardin Corum, his neighbor, they built a sawmill
along a creek that ran through his land. This was the first
sawmill in the valley.
You will need to use some of the information off the sign to find
the final cache site. Find the year that a flood leveled the
mill. Take that number and subtract 1723. That will
give you and last three digits of the N coordinates. Find the
year that the mill ceased operations. Take that number and
subtract 1718. That will give you the last three digits of
the W coordinates. The rest of the N and W coordinates
remains the same. Take a short drive to find the cache site.
It is a small lock and lock.
