This cache is established in conjunction with the History Museum of
Hood River County.
It all started in 1861 when William Odell, originally from
Tennessee, settled in the area. In fact his son Milton, born
in 1863, was the first white child born in the valley. With
more and more people moving into the area the first post office was
opened in 1910. The town was called Newtown, not because of
the valley's famous Newtown apples, but because it was a "new
town". In 1911 the town's name was changed to Odell and,
because of William, that is probably what it should have been all
along.
The Odell Volunteer Fire Department was started in the 1940's and
had the embarrassment of having the fire station burn down in the
1950's. They relocated and built a new and better building.
If you happen to visit while the Chief is there see if he
will tell you some of the stories from the "Order of the Oar".
The cache is located near the memorial that honors the
fallen firefighters. It is a medium/large lock and lock full
of goodies.
