In 1972 Moree NSW Australia's Mayor, Perry James, visited Te Awamutu.
It then had the same Postcode,2400 as did Moree Township.
The Mayor then invited the Te Awamutu Brass Band and the Te Awamutu Pipe Band to attend the Moree A&P Show in 1974.
These visits went ahead and encouraged more visits to Moree.
Moree is a similar sized town to Te Awamutu.

A twin town status was officially agreed on.

At these coordinates above,a Monument was built.
An enclosed waterproof street map cabinet was built into a brick "L" shaped Monument.
This was built and gifted by the then 'Waikato Dairy CO-OP Ltd'.
Constructed in 1984 and to celebrate 100 years of Local Government.
