Stop! The coordinates cited are not the coordinates for the cache. They are the coordinates for the starting area for this letter hybrid geocache. You might need a compass, but if you have a sense of direction, even that isn’t necessary to complete this cache. The cache is less than a ¼ mile from the coordinates given.
Note: This walk follows an equestrian trail in the Brighton State Recreation Area that passes through land open to hunting.
We were driving along one day, when we came across a road that we had never seen before. We followed it until it intersected an equestrian trail at coordinates N 42?30.152 W 83?53.982. We followed the trail east for about 100 feet until we came to a small knot of agitated riders. They looked up from a map that they had spread out on a stump. “We come from Rohan” said one named Éomer, “We are searching for a great treasure for our kingdom, but we’ve gotten word that Minas Tirith is in immediate peril, we must go save it. Many Orcs have come out of Isengard in order to find this treasure before us. Are you willing to find this treasure before the Orcs discover the secret location in the forest?
We agreed most readily, for how could we just watch as Saruman and his minions gain a victory? Éomer instructed us, “This map will share the details to the hiding place near Isengard, but you must continue on this path carefully. Good luck!”
We continued Northeast down the trail, letting the riders go save their city. In about 160 feet we came across a small stream. After studying the map, we learned that it fed the Great River of Mirkwood. The Great River’s enchantment scared us into taking the log to the left across, in case the enchantment came from this tributary; however, one of our party fell off of the log into the water and did not fall into an enchanted sleep, so if you wish, you can take the stepping stones to the right, or you can wade across if you feel so inclined. Another wandering member of our party came across an elfin path near the stream that took him to a woodland bridge.
After we crossed the stream, we continued east and then northward for another 270 feet. We started up a hill and found ourselves surrounded by an old, dense pine forest. The trees moved, but there was no wind. Ents!
The Ents, as the tree race is called, had seen small bands of Orcs searching throughout their forest. Saruman of Isengard had called the Orcs back for a council, but the Ents feared they would be out searching again soon. Under the protection of the fastest Ent, Bregalad, we continued north and east for about 410 feet through their realm. The other Ents waved farewell as we left their territory.
As we continued another 290 feet along the woodland trail in the shadow of Isengard, we discovered that the Orcs had destroyed a stately tree in their efforts to find the treasure. This outraged Bregalad and he called on the other Ents to march downstream of Isengard and pile up mud and stones, damming the river. Thus Isengard flooded, forming the lake you can now see. The Ents still guard the flooded Isengard, but they won’t move when there are people on the trail. You can see them easily; most of the big trees guarding the lake are Ents.
You may discover the treasure the Orcs sought in the tree that they destroyed. As we recall it was on the west side of the trail. It is in a non-descript lock-n-lock container filled with treasure, a stamp, a stamp pad, and log book.
