Geocache Description:

Cache Information
This cache was originally at another point, but had to be moved due to it being in a SSSI area. Next to a well used path, can take buggy's/wheelchairs down next to the cache, but not to actual cache location. When looking directly at the door of the castle you should be able to see Corehouse directly behind.

Corra Castle
The remains of Corra Castle, a 15th century fortified farmhouse built by the Bannatyne family, stand close to Corehouse and by the Corra Linn Falls, defended by cliffs on three sides. The ruins comprise the remains of a tower with basement cellars, and a small courtyard to its east.

Corra means weir in Gaelic, so of course Corra Castle means Weir Castle.

The ruins of Corra Castle stand on the north bank of the Clyde, surrounded on three sides by land described as belonging to the Somervilles in the 1400s (as also shown on the "'Scotland of Old' Map").

Corehouse
Corehouse is a large country house and estate, located approximately 30 miles to the south east of Glasgow, Scotland. The estate is by the Corra Linn Falls on the River Clyde, and close to the World Heritage Site of New Lanark, in South Lanarkshire.

The house was designed around 1820 by Sir Edward Blore for Lord Corehouse and is currently owned by the Cranstoun family. Parts of the house were open to the public during South Lanarksire Council's 2007 Doors Open Day. Part of the estate was given to the Scottish Wildlife Trust, to form the Corehouse Nature Reserve.

Sir Edward Blore not only designed Corehouse, but he also helped design Buckingham Palace.

Clyde Walkway

Clyde Walkway was created in 1995, finished in 2005, and takes in a great walk around New Lanark and past Corra Castle and Corehouse on through Wishaw, Motherwell, Uddingston, Bothwell, Rutherglen and Glasgow. Since placing this cache I have walked the whole of the Clyde Walkway. I have posted an article about the way on my blog.
