This spot is quite simply magnificent... and is a must do
if you happen to be out this way!
Bridal Veil
Falls
It is a very easy walk into the top of the Bridal Veil
(Waireinga) Falls following the Pakoka River for most of the way...
however in order to get to the actual cache hide you will have to
negotiate 'some' steps.
The track into the falls is hard packed gravel and is suitable
for mountain buggy type pushchairs, and there are two really good
viewing areas at the top. But unless you feel like carrying the
pushchair all the way down the steps to the viewing platform at the
bottom of the falls, then this will be as far as they can go.
The rocks around the pool at the bottom of the falls are mainly
soft sandstones (and they have been worn down by the river to form
what is now effectively a large amphitheatre).
If you look up you can see the band of hard basalt rock that has
resisted the erosive power of the river and now forms the lip of
the spectacular 55-metre falls.
Bridal Veil Falls are not the only set of waterfalls in the
world with this name, and New Zealand's version are (as we will all
know) located at 37 degrees south. Interestingly enough at
exactly 37 degrees north Bridal Veil Falls in the Yosemite
National Park California can also be located (near enough to N 37
43.005, W 119 38.790, check out GCHMF7 for the nearest
listing).
The cache itself is a 2 litre sistema (inside a TFM camo bag).
TFM are well aware that getting an accurate and consistent fix
'down here' will always be a bit of a mission, so the hint has been
made fairly explicit.
This spot is actually very popular (despite being slightly 'out
of the way'), so one may have to employ a degree of stealth whilst
making the retieve (yep... the people at the top lookouts
can see you all the way down there!).
As with all caches that are placed within the vicinty of water
or cliffs... Please watch your children!!!
