Located near one of the oldest cemetaries in Hillsboro. The trail is located on Beard Brook Road, just past the swimming hole on the right before the bridge. The terrain rating is for the hike up the trail to the cache, uphill most of the way.
This cemetary is located between Beard Brook Road and Bible Hill Road. The access trail is actually the old stage coach road that ran up over the top of the hill, crossing Bible Hill road by the cell tower and continuing through Fox State Forest. All the land off Bible Hill road is private, it's only approachable from Beard Brook Road. There are lots of old stones up there, pretty creepy at dark or on an overcast day. In the fall of 2007, on All Hallows Eve no less, local youths dug up the grave of Sarah Symonds, supposedly a witch from Salem who came here and lived to her death. It made national headlines and made everyone in town shake their head with wonder. From November 6, 2007 news report: Police said the grave of Sarah Symonds, who died in 1821, was dug up in the Bible Hill Cemetery and her body was taken."The body's certainly missing," said police. A caretaker discovered the hole behind Symonds' headstone. It was 5½ feet deep and perfectly rectangular, with mounds of dirt on each side. No trace of the body was left behind. "We're looking into the reasons why, to see if there's any background that Miss Symonds had in relation to why she would have been taken," Police said. One theory that police are considering is that it might have been the work of someone who believes in witchcraft. "With it being Halloween night and the fact that the hole was dug so perfectly, we don't believe it was grave robbers, because the way it was done and the way the dirt was positioned," Police said. Police said that some believe that if a skull is stolen on Halloween night, it will grant powers to a person who holds it. Have fun, and watch please respect this final resting place for so many of hillsboro's early residents.
