Greystone Lodge was built in 1913, intended as a summer resort
hotel for wealthy guests. A 1918 newspaper listing various New
England resorts described it: "Recently enlarged modern hotel,
situated on mountain top with extensive view. Beautiful scenery,
walks and drives. All outdoor sports, music and dancing. Unuasual
attention to table and service. Healthful and restul."
The Lodge operated successfully for around 20 years before
passing into private ownership. After having a series of private
owners, it fell into disrepair and burned in 1970. The foundation,
chimney, and remains of numerous appliances and equipment still
remain at the site.
To get to the trail from Route 202 in Bennington, take Pierce
Hill Road west, which becomes Verney Rd. When the maintained road
ends at a T, continue ahead, forking slight right into the parking
area at N 43°00.344 W 71°57.088. Those of you who have high
clearance 4WD vehicles may enjoy driving this Class VI road all the
way to the site of the lodge. Most of you will enjoy the walk, just
over 1 mile each way.
Congratulations to Wemedge for FTF.
