A 1 litre sistema container located a few metres off a Rail Trail.
This is the second cache between Stratford and Maffra on the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail. Hopefully more will be placed over its entire length between Stratford and Traralgon. The trail can be walked or travelled by bicycle. The cache location is approximately 1.2 kilometres from the Avon River bridge at Stratford. I recommend parking at the Apex Park and ‘hoofing’ it but if in a hurry then careful parking on the Maffra-Stratford Road will get you to within 150 metres of the cache, but be careful if crossing the Stratford-Maffra Road - traffic moves quickly along this road.
The cache is a ‘colour coded’ 1 litre sistema container, containing small swaps, logbook, pen and cache note.
There is no need to go near the rail line 20-30 metres away. There is no climbing required for this cache. This cache is only a few metres off the Rail Trail.
The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail is a 67km recreational trail well suited for cycling and walking that joins Stratford to Traralgon via the former historic Gippsland Plains railway line route. At present the trail comprises approx 35km of good, flat and gently undulating surface connecting Stratford, Maffra & Heyfield which has been recently upgraded and is easily rideable by mountain and hybrid bicycles. The section from Stratford to Maffra is suitable for road bikes with an excellent new surface. The trail beyond Heyfield to Cowwarr, Toongabbie, Glengarry and Traralgon although established is best suited to mountain bikes at this time. At Stratford the trail begins at the trailhead at Apex Park, on the east side of the Avon River bridge and continues to Maffra, a flat ride and a distance of approx 10km. A short 2.0k road section on the (C105) leaving Maffra rejoins the trail which then continues to Tinamba (7k) and on to Heyfield (13k). From Heyfield, Cowwarr is reached by a combination of trail (mountain bike) and country back roads, then the trail continues to Glengarry, before a road section is necessary to reach Traralgon. Facilities on the trail include toilets, parks and shops. Don’t forget a drink bottle or two.Website: www.gippslandplainsrailtrail.com.au
Trailheads are located at Apex Park Stratford, (adjacent to the Avon River Bridge), at the Gippsland Vehicle Collection Maffra, at the Heyfield Wetlands Centre. Car parking and visitor information is available at all locations.
