De Loobeek is een beek in Limburg en oorspronkelijk een zijrivier van de Maas.
Het Loobeekdal is een smeltwatergeul ontstaan in het Laatglaciaal, op het einde van de laatste ijstijd. Aan de oostzijde bij Smakt werd dit diepe dal door zandstormen afgesnoerd. Het Loobeekdal is de grootste komvormige, terreindepressie (laagte) van de Peel, met een oppervlakte van bijna 1000 ha. In het holocene tijdperk, dat 100 eeuwen geleden aanving, werd dit dal opgevuld met een dik pak laagveen. Het Loobeekdal is een van Noord-Limburgs fraaiste beekdalen.
Nadat eind 19e en begin 20e eeuw het oorspronkelijke brongebied was verveend en dus als zodanig verdwenen was, kreeg de beek een functie ter ontwatering van landbouwgebieden. Hierdoor werd het debiet van het beekje zeer onregelmatig.
Tegenwoordig ontspringt de beek ten noorden van Ysselsteyn en loopt dan in noordoostelijke richting, aanvankelijk door een grootschalige landbouwontginning.
Ten zuiden van Merselo wordt het landschap kleinschaliger. Hier ligt het natuurgebied Loobeekdal. Hier ook volgt de beek een iets natuurlijker loop. Ten noorden van Merselo ligt echter een gebied waar in de jaren '60 en '70 van de 20e eeuw ruilherverkavelingen hebben plaatsgevonden, waarbij de beek verregaand werd gekanaliseerd en ook het landschap in het beekdal zeer grootschalig werd. Uiteindelijk vloeit de Loobeek, tussen Venray en Smakt, samen met het Afleidingskanaal, om door het oorspronkelijke beekdal, maar nu met de naam Afleidingskanaal, de weg naar de Maas te vervolgen. Op dit punt wordt ook het effluent van de waterzuiveringsinstallatie van Venray opgenomen.

The Loobeek is a stream in the 'Peel' and originally an affluent of the River Meuse.
The Loobeekdal is a meltwater trench created in the Late Glacial, at the end of the last ice age. To the east, Smakt this deep valley was stopped by sand storms. Loobeekdal It is the largest ground depression of the Peel, with an area of nearly 1000 hectares. In the Holocene era, which began 100 centuries ago, this valley was filled with a thick layer of peat. Loobeekdal It is one of North Limburg finest stream valleys.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the original source was turned to a bog, and as such is gone. With a function as a drainage of agricultural areas, the flow of water in the stream is very irregular.
Today the river originates just north of Ysselsteyn and runs north east, initially due to major agricultural reclamation.
South of Merselo the landscape is small-scale. This is the Loobeekvalley. Here the brook follows a more natural course. The area north of Merselo has seen a reorganization of farmland in the 60´s and 70´s of the 20th century, which has largely canalized the stream, as well as up-scaled the landscape in the valley. Eventually, in between Venray and Smakt, the Loobeek unites with the Diversion Canal to run through the original valley, where it is then called the Diversion Channel, to continue to flow to the River Meuse. At this point the effluent of the water treatment plant in Venray is also included.
