Geocache Description:

Lietuviškai: Visa Lietuvos teritorija yra ant Baltijos atrezinio baseino (visas baseino plotas yra 460 tukst km2, Lietuvos – 65 200 km2). Atrtezinis baseinas, tai požeminio vandens baseinas, kuri sudaro pakaitomis išsideste vandeningu uolienu ir vandeniui nelaidžiu uolienu (vandensparu) sluoksniai (aukštai). Skirtingi aukštai susidare ivairias geologiniais periodais. Baltijos baseine tokiu aukštu yra 3-4. Vanduo dviejuose viršutiniuose aukštuose yra mažos mieralizacijos, nes pasipildo iš lietaus bei kito paviršinio gelo vandens. Toks vanduo paprastai naudojamas kaip geriamsis vanduo (beveik visas centralizuotai teikiamas geriamasis vanduo Lietuvoje išgaunamas iš arteziniu grežiniu). Žemeskiuose aukštuose vanduo yra suresnis, didesnes mineralizacijos. Toks vanduo tradiciškai nauodojamas gydymui, pvz. Druskninku, Birštono mineraliniai vandenys. Taip pat žr. Lietuvos geologijos tarnybos puslapi

Vandieningiems artezinio basieno sluoksiams budingas spudis. Vandensparoje atsiradus plyšiui suspaustas vanduo savaime veržiasi i žemes paviršiu ir susidaro artezinis šaltinis (versme). Ulos akis – vienas iš tokiu šaltiniu. Šaltinis atrodo lyg mažytis ežerelis, kurio centre nuolat kunkuliuoja vandens sroves maišomas smelis. Šaltinio debitas yra apie 2 l/s. Vanduo kyla aukšciau Ulos vandens lygio ir upeliu nuteka i Ulos upe. 2000 m. versme paskelbta hidrogeologiniu gamtos paminklu.

Ši lobi galesite pažymeti kaip rasta jeigu atsakysite i žemiau pateiktus klausimus:

  1. Ivertinkite, keliais metrais vandens lygis Ulos akyje yra aukštesnis negu Ulos upeje?
  2. „Ištirkite“ šaltinio vandeni ir nustatykite ar jis teka iš viršutiniu ar iš apatiniu artezinio baseino aukštu?
  3. Akies skersmuo yra 3-4 metrai, o koks "vyzdzio", kuriame "verda" smelis, skersmuo?
  4. Kokius dar šaltiniu tipus žinote? (šio klausimo atsakyti nebutina)
Ataskymus i klausimus atsiuskite lobio autoriui Geocaching.com žinute. Nerašykite atsakymu lobio loge! Taip pat prie log'o prisegite nuotrauka, kurioje matosi Ulos akis, GPS irenginys ir lobio radejas. Registruoti lobio radima galima nelaukiant patvirtinimo, taciau logai neatitinkantys auksciau minetu reikalavimu bus pašalinti.

English: Whole territory of Lithuania is on a Baltic artesian basin (area of the basin is 460‘000 sq. km compared to 65‘200 km2 of Lithuania). Artesian basin is groundwater basin consisting of interchanging layers of aquifer layer containing water and impermeable rock or clay. There can be multiple layers formed in different geological periods. In case of Baltic artesian basin there are 3-4 of such layers. Water in the two upper aquifers has low mineralisation because it is recharged with surface freshwater. Such water is usually used as potable water (actually almost all centrally supplied water in Lithuania comes from artesian wells). In the lower levers water has more dissolved salts. Such mineral water was traditionally used for medical purposes in Lithuanian SPA towns of Druskininkai and Birštonas. Also see this page on groundwater form Lithuanian geological service page.

Weigh of layers is building pressure in aquifers of artesian basin. So when the water finds an outlet it flows upwards. If it reaches the surface of the earth – we have a naturally flowing artesian spring. Ula eye is an example of one. The spring outlet looks like a tiny lake. In the centre of the lake sand mixed by strong current bubbles. Flow of the spring is 2 l/s. Water raises above water level of Ula and flows as a tiny creek into the river. The spring was announced a natural monument of hydrogeology in year 2000.

Since the old times people used to assign special and magical properties to the spring and its water. For example old people say that the water can heal various diseases if collected after sunset. There are also tales about a bull which drowned and resurfaced in a nearby lake. You can claim this cache if you answer questions below.

  1. Estimate how many meters water level in Ula Eye is higher compared to water level in Ula river.
  2. Inspect water of the spring and tell if it comes from upper or lower layers of the basin?
  3. Diameter of the spring lake is 3-4 meters. Estimate what is diameter of the area of the bubbling sand?
  4. What other types of springs do you know? (answer is optional)

Please send the answers to cache owner via Geocaching messaging system. Do not post answers directly in the log! Please take a photo of yourself and a GPS with Ula Eye visible in the background. Attach the photo to your log.

You don't have to wait for confirmation but logs not matching the requirements will be deleted.
