Old Lincoln Wagon Road Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

BLMBilbo: I had re-enabled it because riparian restoration crewboss said no more work in that area; and very next day it got nailed by heavy equipment and now find out that more work will be ongoing, so no longer a good place.

Geocache Description:

A cache on a tract of BLM-managed public land along the Rio Bonito, adjacent to the Lincoln State Monument. This is a hike, horseback & mountainbike trail system that follows the Bonito and ties the area in with the Fort Stanton National Conservation Area further west.

In preparation for your search, be sure to use the Geocaching.com Google Map below & click on the satellite image. A lot of people don't do that & thus have trouble finding things - it's a good preparatory backup.

They all came this way - Mescalero leaders Lobo and Josecito, the Hispanic settlers who founded Placita de las Bonita, Billy the Kid, Sheriff Pat Garrett, Alexander McSween, John Tunstall, the Murphy-Dolan Gang, troops from and freight wagons to Fort Stanton, stagecoach passengers, and many, many other persons known and unknown in history. Our ancestors - Native American and Euro-American.

Turn into the parking area across the street/north of the Billy the Kid Pageant arena/Lincoln County Couthouse (your GPS will be pointing the way). Cache is a short hike from here. Park at the terrace edge and hike the left of the two side-by-side dirt roads a short distance downhill. Sometimes the neighbor's dog noisily greets you but he's just all bark - sometimes I pick up a rock and step toward him and off he goes to the house. Pass through the V-stile next to the old piece of farm equipment and walk down the trail. Your GPS will be pointing left but stay on the trail, go through another V-stile/fence and then follow your GPS (right after the V-stile on your left a short distance you'll come to the faint trace of the Old Lincoln Wagon Road).

After the cache, consider following the hiking trail which takes you along the Rio Bonito down behind Lincoln town. This is the area where Billy the Kid and his pards made good their famous escape from the burning McSween house. Pretty cool, huh?
