The Parisch Church of the Blassed Virgin Mary on the Stone

History of the Church:
In 1811 the master mason Jakob Bauer rescued an image of the Holy Virgin from the flooded Danube, and placed it on one of the surviving stone pillars of the Roman aqueduct leading to Aquincum.
The picture was painted ont he model of Lucas Cranach’s Madonna of Innsbruck (Cathedral of St James). People from the neighbourhood called it Maria am Stein (Mary ont he Stone). A stone chapel was built in its vicinity from public contributions under the direction of the master builder József Ziegler in 1865, and the picture was placed there.

Mass was celebrated here regularly from 1921. After a short time it became a popular place of pilgrimage and soon proved to be too small. First a wooden parvis was added. Its two bells were completed in 1992 and are still being sounded manually. The building was enlarged in 1930. It became an independent priesthood from 1937 and a parish in 1942. The new liturgic area was formed in 1982, at the same time when the lovely oak crucifix was mass facing the congregation.
In 1985 the church was enlarged again, according to plans by Tamás László, and blessed by Cardinal László Paskai in 1989.

Description of the church:
Built in neo-Romanesque style, with the windows of the chapel incorporated in the enlarged church during the course of the last alternations. The baptismal font and the holy-water basin were made of red marble from Piszke. The statues and the Stations of the Way of the Cross are the work of the sculptor János Máriahegyi. The painting Mary with the child Jesus int he sanctuary is by an unknwn painter. The two reliefs ont the facade represent the Holy Trinity and St István the first king of Hungary. The marble crucifix standing by the side of the church originates from 1873. In 1999, György Markolt made a new creation, the altar, also made of wood. Originally it stood in front of the portal, and the pilgrim placed their flowers and candle here.
The original shrine is located near the foot of the overpass in this coordinate: N 47° 33.309 ; E 019° 02.697.

Unfortunately, now is pretty disgraceful state shrine and a place for the environment because of the many homeless.
