ITALIAN VERSION
Piramidi di Segonzano Piramidi di Segonzano

The elegant pinnacles made of earth are up to 20 metres high and date back to 50 thousand years ago. They formed when the Avisio glaciers moved and consequently the sides of the mountain broke up with the creation of huge morainic deposits. Throughout time, the erosive action of water moulded these natural columns. Typically the top of the pyramid is covered with a large protective stone, but there are also some pointed ones that are shorter as they are subject to a faster water erosion.

Some infos from info desks on the Piramidi walking route:
If you want to go around all Pyramides via "Piramidi di Segonzano walking route", you must pay some Euros. Some information you can found here: Visit Cembra!!

ONE OF NATURE'S WORKS OF ART
In surroundings of savage beauty, the route passes a natural phenomenon of great interest.
The Pyramids of Segonzano are a curious formation causes by the effect of water erosion. The original moraine covering has been washed away to leave a variety of architectural shapes: principially sharp cones closely grouped together and each surmounted by a protective stone block.
These pyramids are composed of clay and rock agglomerate and some of them are several metres high. They seem to have been created specially to evoke ancient legends and excite modern curiosity.

No.1 - FORMATION
As they hit the ground, drops of rain shift various small particles causing erosion which increase with the slope. However, the ground is not completely washed away because of the mixed composition of the earth. Fragments of various shapes and sizes and the numerous large masses left by the glaciers provide protection against the erosive action of the water.

No.2 - SHAPE
The classic shape of a Pyramid is that of a cone - sharped trunk surmounted by a block. Alongside these can be seen "pointed" Pyramids with a conical body but without the protective capping block - these are generally not very high, indicating that they have evolved rapidly. Another typical shape is the "crest" formation of a sharp ridge of earth that has been cut back. This formation is caused by the erosion of the watershed between two gullies. Sometimes the Pyramids are grouped into "organ pipes".

No.3 - VEGETATION
The covering of vegetation is very important in the conservation of the Pyramids, because it controls the erosive action of water: roots, mosses and leaves effectively bind the earth and impede its erosion. The presence of vegetation in the gullies shows where erosion hat been considerably reduced.
Some Pyramids are surmounded by protective bushes and trees. More frequent are large bastions which have been isolated by erosion and upon which the vegetation has reamined intact.
