Geocache Description:

Do you know there's a Museum of Local History in the Mission District of Fremont?

From the mid 19th Century to the mid 20th Century, back before the cities of Fremont, Newark, and Union City were incorporated, this area was called Washington Township. In those days, the whole Alameda County was divided into 6 townships - Alameda, Brookly, Eden, Murray, Oakland, and Washington.

Hidden in a quiet corner in the Mission District of Fremont is a small museum, the Museum of Local History. In addition to a small but interesting collection of artifacts from that period, including a buggy that used to be in the Chadbourne Carriage House near Fremont Hub, you can also find a small part of the Ice Age fossils dug up from the nearby Bell Quarry. The museum also has a great collection of books about local history, and a number of aerial photos showing what the area used to look like. Check out the museum's website for more information.

Across the street from the entrance to the museum, you can find the oldest post office in Fremont. The Mission San Jose Post Office was first opened in 1850, though obviously they are not in the original building. A building from the Gold Rush era can be found along Mission Boulevard, and a short distance away is the Spanish Mission of San Jose.

You can check the museum's website for opening hours. However, you do not need to enter the museum to get to this cache. In fact, you cannot get to this cache from inside the museum. The cache is located around the corner from the entrance. I would recommend doing this in the day only, though it is accessible 24/7. Street parking is available along all nearby streets.

The hide is a small bison tube, not directly visible. The cache has gone missing a few times, so it is now in a very close by alternate spot. There are some trees, so accuracy may not be spot on. Use the hint to narrow down the search radius if necessary. I'll adjust the difficulty and coordinates as necessary according to feedback, so please log your DNFs or send me e-mail.

Congratulations to blanston12 on being the FTF!

Difficulty bumped up 1/2 star from feedback.

April 1, 2012 - replaced in a slightly different location, very short distance from the original

May 11, 2014 - replaced again, different hide style, short distance away from original.
