Geocache Description:

Undiscovered Naxos #6

Garinou Springs

The sixth cache of this series is placed in a place which you can't imagine that exist in Naxos island.
This place is the area of Halandron where was firstly build the village of Kinidaros. The area had rich and dense vegetation with a lot of waters and wild animals. From there it started the ancient aqueduct that manufactured by Ligdamis the 6th B.C. century and supplied Chora with water.
Today in the area of Halantron there is the almost abandonded church of Saint Dimitrios, next to it the grandiose royal church of Saint Artemios and little below the devastated settlement of "Kioura".

All these are in a small canyon which is crossing from the water source of Garinou. To get until there you have two choices. The first one is difficult the other is harder. For both of them you have to drive first a hard downhill dirty road and then to walk along the stream of the water until the cache area. The dirty roads from both directions are not suitables for normal cars, they are really hard.
If you want to follow the first route (the difficult one) you will find the start of the road at the last houses of the village Kinidaros as you are coming from Chora after you have pass through the village you must turn left at the coordinates 37° 06.018N, 25° 28.972 where there is also a sign which indicate "Ag. Artemios". At the begining it is a cement road but after the last house begin the dirty part and you have to drive for 5km going down, down, down. The road stops outside of the virtually ruined church of Agios Dimitrios. From there you have to continue on foot. Very close to Ag. Dimitrios and in the direction to the cache area is the big church of Ag. Artemios. It's also almost abandoned but it's worth a visit as it seems to be the biggest church in Naxos island. From there the cache area is less than 500 meters.

If you are a fan of the adventure and you want to follow the harder route, you will find the start of the dirty road 500m at the coordinates 37° 06.102N, 25° 29.086E, after the last houses of Kinidaros village in direction from Kinidaros to Moni village, at the left. This is also a hard dirty road and the only difference from the first one is that it is shorter. It is about 2,5 Km until the torrent where you can park. The difficult part of the journey is the descent of the torrent to the area of the cache. Find the way to follow the torrent and it will guide you to the cache area. We had done 3 hours (both ways) for this route but it's worth the effort and you will see the dense vegetation of the area, quite a few of waters , water pit with turtles and frogs.

We wish you good and pleasant geocaching on Naxos island.
