A short stroll through a little known Nature Reserve hidden away in a Gosforth suburb – Fencerhill Wood is a 1.9ha area of mixed woodland and wetland off the Ouse Burn.
Tucked away in Gosforth suburbia, this small woodland area is situated by a tributary of the Ouse Burn, in Whitebridge Park. The wood contains a mix of tree species including oak and ash. There is a wet central area to the reserve with large stands of reedmace, and a recently added walk-way over the wetland. The wood also supports a small population of roe deer. Tawny owl and great-spotted woodpecker are also found. Placed with kind permission from the Northumberland Wildlife Trust (NWT), this cache is a small tupperware container with room for small swaps and trackables. It's under tree cover, so GPS reception may not be the best. We suggest you park at the co-ordinates given in the additional Waypoints below. There's a new board-walk through much of the wood, which should make it possible to access the vicinity of the cache by pushchair, and even wheelchair, but the last part is off the path. Directions (from NWT website) - Location and access: Follow the Great North Road to Gosforth, turn in at Broadway East and follow the road round Whitebridge Park until you reach Charleswood, where you will find the entrance with a reserve sign. There is limited car parking available in the neighbouring housing estate on Charleswood, but please do not block access to the houses. This cache has been muggled a couple of times, so please make sure to conceal it well enough when you leave it, thanks!
