ODE TO JOYfield
This is a dawn to dusk cache. When entering this cache site, please be respectful.

Joyfield Township, a township in Benzie County, Michigan, was organized in 1868 when Benzie County was still a part of Grand Traverse County. The Reverend Charles E. Bailey, the founder of Benzonia, named the township ”Joyfield” for the Joy family who were early settlers of the area. Arriving in 1863, the Reverend Amariah Joy and his son William A. Joy entered homesteads near what is now US 31 and Joyfield Road. William, a Civil War soldier, who fought at the Battle of Shiloh, continued service to his community. He served as postmaster of the Joyfield Post Office and as township supervisor. William described his first cabin as an 8 by 10 ft. shanty with a bark roof, which leaked in rainy weather. The family later moved into a larger log cabin which often was a stopping place for travelers going between Traverse City and Manistee on the main road linking these two towns. Joyfield Township was well adapted to farming and growing fruit even to this day.
