Geocache Description:

St Mary’s Church Stow Welcome to our 2nd cache to be found near to St Mary’s Church Stow. This cache is a nano. Stow is a small village, 11 miles northwest of the city of Lincoln. Known as the Mother Church of Lincoln Cathedral, it is a magnificent sight, one of the largest and oldest parish churches in England. It is a grade 1 listed building, so please be careful if you venture into the church and yard. A little history On of the Saxon bishops of Dorchester on Thames, Bishop Aelfnoth, in about 975, built a church to serve, it seems, as head Minster (or mother church) for the Lincolnshire part of his large diocese. It was then a sort of cathedral because some of his priests lived in Stow and administered this part of the diocese. They later became known as the cathedral chapter. This gave rise to the belief that Stow was the Mother Church of Lincoln Cathedral. This is only a very small part of its history and more information can be found on their website. Close by you will see the Cross Keys Inn, which serves food and real ales. This is highly recommended for refreshments.
