Geocache Description:

This tree inspired me, thriving as it as despite the obvious falls and setbacks it's suffered in life.

The cache is located at the coordinates given, though they may be slightly off because of the leaf cover. The exact location should be obvious once you get close. If you post the coordinates as you saw them in the log, I'll improve the accuracy by averaging.

You can park in the NT car park at +53° 32' 59.56", -3° 5' 42.57" (£3.50 fee) or on St. Luke's Church Road for free.

This cache is located in the nature reserve at Formby. It's home to a significant colony of red squirrels. The Red Squirrel, or sciurus vulgaris, is native to Britain, and is really only red during winter - their coats turn a darker browney-black colour in spring.

Over the past century their numbers have declined greatly due to competition from greys, which were introduced here from North America in 1876. Now there are only an estimated 150,000 Red Squirrels left in the UK compared with over two million greys - which means the reds could be outnumbered six to one!

It's estimated that 85 per cent of the remaining population live in the North of England. At Formby Squirrel Reserve, the population typically numbers three or four adult squirrels per hectare.
