Geocache Description:

At the Tamassos Dam near Pera village on the road to Machaira.

This dam was completed in 2002 and is named after the ancient city of Tamassos which is thought to lie under the nearby villages of Pera, Politiko and Episkopio. Its thought to date back to the 8th century BC and developed greatly because of its trade in copper. It seems to have gone into decline during the Roman and Hellenistic periods. There are several pieces of archeological diggings from Tamassos in the Cyprus Archeological Museum in Lefkosia. And if you would like to know more and see some archeological diggings during your visit there is a site in Politiko village which you can explore. Just follow the signs for Tamassos, however keep in mind that they have opening times between 9.30-17.00.
Some other random facts are that if you flew into Cyprus from Europe you most likely flew over this area and at night you can see the plane traffic. The other is that its a popular fishing spot for local fishermen which you may see around.
This is the first cache that I have created, hope you enjoy!
