Geocache Description:

This cache is at a 19th century barn with significant historical value to the area. The cache is placed with permission, provided cachers follow the rules and
DO NOT ENTER THE BARN!
If people do, the cache will be removed. Please park in the parking lot, and walk to the cache. Management has asked that no one take vehicles in the access road.

Aaron Sheely and his family lived in Gettysburg at the time of the Battle of Gettysburg. In the summer of 1863, his farm became the headquarters for General Marsena Patrick, M.D. who was the provost marshal for the Union.

General Patrick was responsible for the care and transportation of all prisoners, wagon trains and hospital guards. All of Confederates left behind when Lee retreated became prisoners of war. They were guarded on the Aaron Sheely farm, and the injured soldiers were cared for there. This barn, and the surrounding land served not only as the prisoner of war camp, but also as General Patrick's headquarters. To be near the prisoners, he stayed in the barn.

On July 2, 1863, General Patrick finished interviewing "a great many prisoners." He then moved forward to Gettysburg where he formed a central depot for Rebel captives. This depot was somewhere within the Union Lines south of Gettysburg, possibly along or adjacent to the Baltimore Pike.

As ealy as July 4th, plans were under way to start moving the prisoners to railroads so that they could be transported to the large POW camps already in place by the Union forces.

About the cache: The cache you seek is an ammo can. Please watch your footing, and we can't stress enough, DO NOT ENTER THE BARN! We would like this cache to continue as there are plans to place this building on the National Historic Register, and hopefully in the coming years to restore it. If you move travelers, please log them in and out. And as always, please replace as found.

Special thanks to Phil for his help suggesting this site, gathering the historic information, and finally for granting permission!
