El Cerro de la Atalaya es el pico emblemático de la ciudad de Cieza. Se corona habitualmente tras unos 700m de recorrido zizagueante por su ladera Este para superar el desnivel (unos 250m) desde la carretera y llegar a la cumbre. En algunos puntos se pierde el sendero, pero no hay ningún tramo peligroso hasta llegar arriba. Subir, subir y subir. Las agrupaciones dispersas de pinos en la subida son ideales para recuperar el resuello.
Serie Cieza Elevaciones #1
Salir de Cieza por la carretera de Mula (C-330) atravesando el Segura por el Puente de Hierro (o "de los 9 ojos"), a unos 3,3Km (antes del estrechamiento del "Puente Meco") hay un desvío de la carretera a hacia la izquierda (señalizado "Camino de la Atalaya - Santuario Virgen del Buen Suceso"). La carretera es de doble sentido (se ha cortado al tráfico el tramo de bajada que iba rodeando el cerro de la Atalaya). A unos 900m hay una bifurcación, tomaremos el camino de la izquierda. Al final se llega a la zona de aparcamiento del Santuario (bastante amplio) pero se puede continuar hasta casi la base de la Ermita (hay una pequeña rotonda). La zona está preparada para hacer picnic.
El Cerro de la Atalaya se alza a la izquierda de la Ermita. El sendero empieza unos metros más allá de la cadena que corta el antiguo camino de bajada (cerca de la rotonda).
No es un sitio fácil para que suban los niños (aunque yo de pequeño subía con mi padre). No se requiere equipo especial, pero es recomendable ir calzado con unas botas que agarren bien (trekking). Llevar agua.
Desde lo alto del cerro se disfruta de unas impresionantes vistas de los meandros del Segura abrazando el casco antiguo de Cieza y sus fértiles huertas, el Cerro del Castillo, los Morrones de Bolvax, Abarán, la Sierra del Oro, el Almorchón, la Sierra de Ascoy, el Parque Natural de la Sierra de la Pila, la Sierra del Solán y la Sierra de Ricote.
No es un camino muy frecuentado, aunque forma parte de las rutas de senderismo de la región. La localización del cache es visible desde el último tramo de subida.
El Caché es un Tupperware dentro de un saquito de camuflaje.

Cieza's Elevations Series #1
The "Cerro de la Atalaya" ("Hill of the Watchtower" 
) is the emblematic mountain of Cieza. It is crowned habitually after 700m of a zigzag route in his East hillside to surpass the 250m difference in height. The footpath is lost in some points, but there is no dangerous section until arriving above. The dispersed groupings of pines, in the ascent, are ideal to recover the breath
Follow the C-330 through Cieza towards Mula. After 3,3 km turn left on to the road heading towards "Camino de la Atalaya - Santuario Virgen del Buen Suceso". This is a two-way asphalted road (not showed in my Gamin). About 900m there is a bifurcation: take the left. Go straight until reaching the zone of parking (quite ample, with a picnic zone) or continue a little to the base of the Hermitage (there is a small roundabout and some parking places).
The "Cerro de la Atalaya" is raised to the left of the Hermitage. The footpath begins some meters beyond the chain that cuts the old descending road (near the roundabout).
It is not children friendly (although I climbed frequently with my father when I was). No special equipment required, but it is recommendable to go footwear with good walking boots (trekking) and take water.
From the stop of the hill you can enjoy impressive views of meanders of the Segura river embracing the old centre of Cieza and its fertile orchard, the Castle Hill, and several mountains and elevations...
Although it is not very frequented track it is comprised in the routes of trekking of the region. The cache location is visible from the last section of the ascent
The Cache is a Tupperware within a camouflage coat.
