Geocache Description:

An easy micro at Frog Pond Wetland Preserve

Frog Pond Wetland Preserve is a remnant of a riparian corridor which once extended from the Laureles Grade divide to Seaside Beach on Monterey Bay. Where wetlands were once considered of little or no value, and drained for housing or other use, their ecological importance is now recognised and the rapid rate of loss has made them one of the most endangered habitats in California.

Over the past 200 years California is estimated to have lost over 91% of its original welands. In 1976 the Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District purchased the property to protect it from becoming a residential subdivision.

Today it is a living legacy for the residents of Del Rey Oaks and the Peninsula.

A small amount of parking is available off the Canyon Del Rey near the cache.

Consider visiting at various times of the year to see how the wetland changes. There's a 3/4 mile Loop Trail through some interesting areas.
