A traditional cache situated along the Cassop Vale circular walk, which runs alongside one of the areas many Crowtrees Heritage trails. The walk leads you through the Cassop Vale nature reserve and out into the surrounding countryside, however please note that the cache itself is not placed within the reserve.
Park in the centre of Cassop, heading down the Vale directly opposite the village post office. The walk starts and ends with a short but very steep incline, however it does feature a beautiful view of Durham city and it’s impressive Norman Cathedral.
.
Cassop Vale national nature reserve’s unique grasslands have developed on lime-rich soils, in an area which was a shallow tropical sea 250 million years ago and is now abundant with limestone flora, such as blue moor grass, rock-rose, globe-flower and bird’s-eye primrose.
It is also home to many insects and birds, including the northern brown argus butterfly, yellowhammer, whitethroat and green woodpecker. Birdwatchers may note that spring and summer are the best times to visit this area, but fellow geocachers will appreciate the views on a clear day any time of the year.
At the bottom of the steep hill, take the path on the right towards the pond. Enjoy the views here and then carry on straight ahead until you reach a crossroads in the footpaths, with a small bench on the right hand side.
Continue straight on to reach the cache directly.
