A NIGHT cache, one of three located just off Hampshire Road in Sleepy Creek WMA. This cache is less than .3 mile from the parking area. A short easy walk on a very flat wide dirt road! It's easy walking, something nice to have on a night cache.
Be sure to do "NIGHT CREATURES" GC3X6GT. The final to this cache and Night Creatures are less than .2 mile apart, and they use the same road. But..... Night Creatures is like NO other night cache you have done. It's a night cache with a FUN twist.
I live at the base of this mountain. I have placed several caches on these hills and seldom do I see wildlife……. But at night it's different here - these woods come alive. There are thousands of eyes in these woods. When evening arrives, the night sounds fill the air. Most notable is the sounds of the coyotes. The coyote is a very vocal animal. It has a number of vocalizations including barks, growls, yips, whines and howls.
The Sleepy Creek WMA crawls with packs of these animals.
The scariest sound is when a bobcat screams and is followed by the howls of the coyotes. Many a night the howls are so loud that we are awaken from a sound sleep.
The coyote does most of it's hunting alone and at night. It is carnivorous. Most of its diet is made up of mammals. When hunting larger prey, like deer, coyotes hunt in packs. One or more coyotes will chase the deer while the others wait, then the next group will pick up the chase. Working in teams like this, the coyote can tire the deer out, making it easier to kill.
Coyotes make their dens in rocky crevices, logs, caves or the dens of other animals. So if find yourself looking for the cache in the rocks, better be careful.
Park at the coordinates posted. Then start looking for the eyes, white eyes. WHEN ONE EYE IS WHITE AND THE OTHER RED, TURN IN THE DIRECTION OF THE RED EYE!!!!!! TURN, DON'T FOLLOW THE WHITE DOTS, THEY ARE TO THROW NON-CACHERS OFF ! When you see two red eyes - your getting close. It's so easy you can find it in the dark. :)
Bring a strong light with extra batteries. Don't be caught in these woods without a light. Most of your walk will be on a dirt road/path. No bushwacking is necessary. The cache is only about 100 ft. off the trail.
