Geocache Description:

The Lincolnshire Edge

The geological map of Lincolnshire shows a series of parallel bands stretching from north to south, which dips gently from west to east.
The Lincolnshire Edge, or Lincoln Cliff runs for more than fifty miles from the Humber to Grantham. This is the west facing scarp slope formed by the resistant Middle Jurassic rocks, the principal member of which is the Lincolnshire limestone, which is an important water-bearing bed and is quarried for building stone at Lincoln, Ponton, Ancaster and Kirton Lindsay.
The cliff is broken in two places by rivers – Lincoln and Ancaster.
At Leadenham the hill comprises two steps. The higher one is the Lincolnshire Limestone, and the lower one, on which the village sits, is Marlstone Ironstone. This forms a spring line on which a number of villages are found. The steps are obvious when travelling through Leadenham, but the A17 by-pass smoothes out these gradients. Other villages have steep ascents from the eastern valley.

Because the prevailing winds in the area are south-westerly they are forced into rising currents when they reach the Cliff. In the early days of flying these up currents were of great advantage to aircraft when taking off and landing and were the reason why many airfields were established on the edge of the scarp during the first World War. Some of these airfields are still in active use today.
