You've all been over the viaduct which bears its name, but now's
your chance to actually visit the village of Thelwall... or should
that be City of Thelwall?
This event takes place at the Pickering Arms, a friendly little pub
in Thelwall, a village on the outskirts of Warrington. On the wall
of the pub there is a plaque commemorating Thelwall's foundation,
by King Edward the Elder, the son and successor of Alfred the
Great. A story has grown up stating that Thelwall was founded as a
city by the king, and many residents believe it should still be
considered as one - a bit like other tiny cities such as St Davids
in west Wales.
To quote:
"Kynge Edwarde made a cite at Thelewall in [th]e northe parte of
[th]e Marches, nye the water of Mersee, where he put a certeyne
knyghtes"
(Polychronicon Ranulphi Higden monachi Cestrensis, 1587), quoted
on Wikipedia
The truth of the matter is not clear, though recent theories point
to a mistranslation of the Old English 'burh', meaning fortified
settlement, being to blame for this belief. Whatever the truth,
Thelwall will always be a city to some, even if nowadays it has the
feel and charm of a Cheshire village.
You are welcome to turn up any time from 6pm and good food
will be available for those who want it. Please indicate in your
logs if you intend to have a pub meal, and how many of you will be
attending. If you want food, please let me know by 10th October at
the latest.
If you haven't been to a monthly meet for the NW Cachers before why
not come along - we're a friendly bunch and everyone is welcome!
