Geocache Description:

Fire Lookout Towers have stood on Boucher Hill since the 1920s. Named after early pioneer William E. Bougher, the peak was the perfect place for detecting wild fires over Southern California. The first in a series of three lookout towers was built by the U.S. Forest Service. Just an 8 x 8 box on stilts, the lookout climbed a ladder to get to his post!

Most recently, the tower was run by the California Department of Forestry. By the mid 1980s, however, it was no longer needed. Smog from the valleys below was so thick that on many days a lookout couldnt even see the ground where the fires started. Also, air traffic had increased, and the pilots flying over often spotted and reported the fires. The lookout tower that had been so invaluable for over 60 years was closed.

Today, throughout the state, fire lookout towers are being opened to the public. Volunteers are staffing these icons of the past, bringing a unique part of Californias history to life once again.

The tower is believed to be an Army surplus air traffic control tower from Fort Roberts.

The cache is small, plastic and magnetic.  Enjoy the views!
