Well this is our first Traditional Cache hide, but let’s just say the container itself is not exactly traditional (hey, they can’t all be little Sistema containers after all). It’s a good size though, so shouldn’t be all that hard to find. It contains a log book, pencil and sharpener. The track from Collingwood Street is steep, so we recommend sturdy shoes.
There are a few caches scattered around the Grampians, and we think the best approach to our one is from the Collingwood Street or Van Dieman Street entrance to the track, as it’s only a small-ish detour off the track which runs between the “Investigate” Cache GC1XK9W and the “Nelson’s Fault” Earth Cache GC1KRFG. If you start at the Collingwood Street entrance, park on Collingwood Street at S 41° 16.883 E 173° 17.191.
You can also reach the cache site from the Brook Street end of the track, but that’s a fairly boring walk up a gravel road, with nothing much to look at, so the other route is nicer. The cache is located not far off a leafy walkway. Allow around 1.5 hours return, at a middle-aged plodding speed, less if you are a fitness fanatic, more if you are with young children examining each blade of grass and pine cone on the way up. When you find the cache, you can always phone for a pizza to be delivered to you by helicopter, to make it all worthwhile.
Please replace the cache container carefully so that it cannot be seen as you approach its hiding place and do a bit of fluffing to cover your tracks.
