If you’re looking for some serious “outdoor cred” this is the cache for you!
Mt Cavern is on many a Flinders Ranges “Peak Baggers” list of must do’s and this walk is one of Bowz2’s favourites.
Mention to an outdoor enthusiast that you’ve “done” Mount Cavern and you gain instant respect, add some rain and high winds and you’re a legend (well almost).
It’s particularly good as a nice training walk if you are planning a trip into the Himalaya’s, the Andes’ or the Swiss Alps.
Mt Cavern is located in the Mount Remarkable National Park and the trek to the peak is a reasonably well defined trail but is considered by National Parks to be...
“Physically demanding, therefore users should be experienced bushwalkers with good navigational skills. As it passes through a remote area where the trail is unmarked, with steep rocky assents and descents”.
According to the National Parks brochure:
It’s an 11 km / 6 hour return for the full circuit,
(see map page 6)
(visit link)
Please note: Bowz2 thinks...National parks are a bit over cautious with their warnings and time required to complete the walk, don’t let them put you off as it’s not that bad. The track is generally easy to follow and it is a nice walk.
Heed this warning...
The Bowz2 philosophy of "what you get out of the experience is equal to the effort you put in" certainly applies to this walk to the cache! and it does provide magnificent views of the Alligator Basin, the plains, Spencer Gulf and towns all from a magnificent view point.
(AND is in Bowz2's opinion one of the best walks in the Flinders)
Bowz2 suggests: do the walk clockwise reaching the peak and cache first then traversing the Black Range to the “Black Range Lookout” as it provides the best views and vistas, (if you do it this way maybe add a star to the terrain rating?) however most sane walkers do it anticlockwise as it’s supposedly easier... (You decide!)
The view from Mount Cavern is a little restricted by tall trees but there are fine vantage points along the entire route. The cache is on the summit, but NOT in the Cairn (DONT disturb it!)
Wear good shoes / boots; take a copy of the map / brochure / track notes, compass, some water, food, and a rain jacket, as the weather can turn in a heartbeat.
