Nice park with closeby parking to the east or west. Very easy to get to so bring the kids to play awhile.
It's Kansas...what are we known for??? Dorothy, Toto and tornadoes. Although in television there was a happy ending... as many Kansas residents know this doesn't always happen when Mother Nature strikes.
I remember the story well...my mom was pregnant with my brother and holding onto my sister as she walked out of the grocery store just southwest of what is now the middle school and looked west and saw the Wrong Way Tornado.
It was June 10th, 1958 at 5:50 p.m. when a tornado tore through this small town in south central Kansas. Typically, tornados tend to come from the southwest and head towards the northeast...tearing apart homes, businesses and anything else that stands in it's way. This one was unique in that it came from the northwest and headed to the southeast along the southwest side of town. Thirteen residents of El Dorado died that day and 100 homes were destroyed. Skelly school to the southeast of this cache was damaged also (I do not know the extent of damage to it as my mother never said too much about it...I am surprised about that, lol)
In this park stands a memorial to those who lost their lives that day. If you come from the east you will get to cross over a cute bridge.
Please note: This cache container keeps soming up missing however I would really like to keep this one going so don't look for the container. Instead visit the memorial and email me what town the rescuers returned the favor to in 2007. Any logs not having sent an email will be delted.
