Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache situated in the Potchefstroom CBD. This is the first of a series of Potchefstroom history caches.

The longest oak lane in the Southern hemisphere:

Potchefstroom boasts its own living national monument: the longest oak avenue in the Southern hemisphere, which was declared a national monument in 1975.

The 700 oak trees were planted in 1910 from the Agricultural Centre to the Lakeside Resort: An oak avenue of 6.48km long comprising of Botha, Retief, van Riebeeck, Kock, Kruger and Tom streets as well as Calderbank Avenue.

To commemorate this living national monument a bronze plaque was erected in 1977 on the corners of Lombard and Kruger streets, on stones from the old North Bridge. The oak avenue was planted in terms of a resolution passed by the Town Council of Potchefstroom and the Parks and Recreation Committee chaired by BR Gericke on 12 September 1910.

The avenue of 6.48km has since become an important feature of Potchefstroom.
