The famous Polynesian explorer, Toi Te Huatahi, visited the
islands of the Hauraki Gulf during the era of the first migrations
from Hawaiki to Aotearoa. From this visit came the collective name
that was later applied to all of the islands in the Gulf including
Rangitoto and Motutapu. It was 'Nga poito o te Kupenga o Toi Te
Huatahi ' or, 'the floats of the fishing net of Te Huatahi'
