Geocache Description:

An easy find on a howitzer in Merredin.

WanderingAus wandered by on day 114 of a "climatic refugee" trip, heading home far too early imho, but The WanderingMrs (aka SWMBO) has a function she MUST attend tomorrow. Two days of storms, heavy rain, and very strong head winds has had us using far too much fuel, so it was nice to wake up to almost still conditions for a change.

We pulled into a parking area in Merredin to have morning tea and found ourselves just down the road from the Merredin Military Museum. Out in front of the museum was this 6 Inch 26 Cwt Howitzer, made by Vickers Ltd in 1918.

I immediately thought of claiming GA1381 RSL War Artefacts/Memorabilia by MADSTARS.

MADSTARS offers extra points for his cache if the finder also places a cache on the War Artefact, and I had come equipped for just such an eventuality. After a quick saturation check (nothing within 44.19 kilometres by my calculation) I determined that I could place a cache on the howitzer, so I hid an Eclipse mint tin containing a logbook and pencil somewhere on the gun, almost as far from the barrel as you could get. For those unfamiliar with Guns and Howitzers, the BARREL is the upper-most hollow round pipe-like component which protrudes to the left and angles upward in the above image. It protrudes from the Breech, which is where shells are inserted before being fired. There are two ways to get "almost as far from the barrel as you could get", to the right just short of the tow ring, or to the left in the air 10 km away, just short of the projectile impact area. Because of the variable effect of wind on projectiles I thought it prudent to place it to the right of the Breech SOMEWHERE.

IT IS NOT IN THE BARREL!

If you don't find an Eclipse mint tin you haven't found the cache.

This cache is part of a series leading towards my WanAus 179 - Discover Western Australia cache, replacing GC1QYF1 WanAus 90 - Chevy Chase which was archived due to the absence of the Chevy. The appropriate DWA number is in the back of the log book. You will need to record this number in the format 90? (from WanAus 90 and ? for the DWA number) for future reference. Note that the number is NOT to be recorded as 136 n. In fairness to those who found GC1QYF1 WanAus 90 - Chevy Chase and recorded the DWA number, the calculations remain unchanged.

Please treat this area with respect and take a moment or two to reflect on the service of those this area commemorates, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
