Using the provided trail head waypoint (see waypoints), "Rock hop" down into the canyon following the Evitt's Homesite Trail and find yourself surrounded by hemlock, mountain laurel and rhododendron. No need to cross the footbridge to find the cache. Near GZ you'll have a great view of Rocky Gap Run.
NOTE: This cache was designed for seekers to use the trail to get to GZ and not to go straight down from the dam. When using the trail be careful with young children as the trail does get very steep on the way to the cache. You will have to do some rocky hopping. Also be aware that there are cliffs just off the trail in areas (great for rappelling). Have fun be careful and watch out for snakes! Hunting Season! The cache and part of the trail to the cache is on hunting grounds, so wear bright colors (blazed orange) during hunting season!
History:
-Evitts Mountain Name: The mountain is named in honor of an early pioneer in Allegany County, Maryland, thought by some to have gone by the last name of "Evart". In the 1780s, Mr. Evart decided to contemplate his bachelorhood from the isolated mountain top of what is today Evitts Mountain, now in Rocky Gap State Park, far from the comforts of society. He just wanted to be forgotten. So what did we do? Named a mountain after him.
-Take the hike:
If you want to do the full Evitts Homesite Trail just cross the small cascading stream on the footbridge and begin to climb Evitt's Mountain. This is an ambitious trail that climbs about 1,000 feet in elevation in 2.5 miles (5 miles round-trip) to the Homesite. After visiting the Homesite continue up the mountain an additional mile to the Mason-Dixon Line featuring a monument. Finally, a few 100 feet north of the Mason-Dixon Line there is a clearing offering great views! This trail to the Mason-Dixon Line offers a great hike for those willing to take the challenge. From the trailhead to the Mason-Dixon Line is approx 3.5 miles with approx 1,100 feet in elevation change (7 mile round trip)
Had some trouble with the coordinates (+/- 30) So I'm leaving a BIG HINT!
